Terms of use

1. The service

makebeats is a browser-based drum machine and step sequencer. It is a client-side web application: the software runs on your device using the Web Audio API, and we do not operate a server that stores your music or your projects.

We may update, change or discontinue parts of the service. If we ever decide to shut makebeats down, we will give reasonable notice on this site, and because the app runs locally you will still be able to use the copy already loaded in your browser. You should keep your own backups of anything you care about — see section 7.

2. Your licence to use makebeats

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use makebeats. This applies to the free plan and, where purchased, to Pro.

You may not:

• Resell, sublicense or redistribute makebeats or a Pro licence key as if it were your own product.
• Publish, share or post a Pro licence key publicly so that others can use it. Licence keys are personal to the purchaser.
• Attempt to defeat, bypass or remove the licence check for the purpose of avoiding payment.
• Use makebeats to break any law, or to infringe anyone else's rights.

3. Free and Pro

The free plan is available to everyone at no cost and with no account, and includes a working subset of the app.

Pro is a one-time $29 payment that unlocks the product for life. There is no subscription, no renewal and no recurring charge. "Lifetime" means the life of the makebeats service: you get access for as long as makebeats exists, and every future Pro feature is included at no extra cost.

One purchase covers all devices you personally use. Your first device unlocks automatically after checkout; on other devices you restore access with your licence key.

4. Payment

Payments are processed by Lemon Squeezy, who act as merchant of record. That means Lemon Squeezy is the seller of record for your purchase, they handle the transaction, and they calculate, collect and remit any applicable sales tax or VAT. We never see or store your card details.

The price shown in the app and on the pricing page is in US dollars. Your purchase is also subject to Lemon Squeezy's own terms, which apply to the transaction.

5. Refunds

If you are not happy with Pro, email [email protected] within 7 days of purchase and we will refund you in full, no questions asked. Refunds are issued through Lemon Squeezy to your original payment method.

When a purchase is refunded, the associated Pro access is revoked.

6. Your music is yours

Everything you create with makebeats belongs to you. We claim no ownership over your beats, patterns, recordings or exported files.

You are free to use what you make for any purpose — personal, commercial, in releases, in videos, in client work, monetised or not — without crediting makebeats and without paying us anything beyond the one-time Pro price. You do not need to ask permission.

We do not receive copies of your work and we cannot see it. Beats you share are encoded in the link you send, not sent to us.

7. Availability and backing up

makebeats is provided "as is". It runs in your browser, so it depends on your browser and device supporting the Web Audio API. We do not guarantee it will work on every browser or device, or that it will be free of bugs.

Keep your own backups. Saved beats live in your browser's local storage, which can be cleared by browser settings, private browsing or cleaning tools, or lost if you change device. We cannot recover them for you, because we never had them. Use the WAV export for anything you would be sad to lose.

8. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, makebeats is provided without warranties of any kind, and we will not be liable for any indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of the app, including lost work, lost recordings or lost profits.

Where liability cannot be excluded, our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us — which, on the free plan, is zero, and on Pro is the $29 purchase price.

Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under the consumer law of your own country that cannot be waived.

9. Privacy, in plain terms

We try to collect as little as possible, and we do not want your personal data.

• Your music and projects stay on your device. They are not uploaded to us.
• If you buy Pro, Lemon Squeezy collects the details needed to process the payment and email your receipt, including your email address. They act as merchant of record and handle that data under their own privacy policy.
• We store a minimal purchase record so that your licence can be verified and restored, and so a refunded purchase can be revoked. This may include your email address, a customer identifier, an order identifier and a hashed form of your licence key. We do not store your card details or your music.
• Locally, the app stores your beats and your Pro access token in your browser's local storage.
• No advertising trackers and no selling of personal data. Ever.

You can ask us what we hold about you, or ask us to delete it, by emailing [email protected]. Note that deleting your purchase record may prevent us from helping you restore a licence later.

10. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the product changes. When we do, we will change the "last updated" date above. If a change is significant, we will make that clear on this page. Continuing to use makebeats after a change means you accept the updated terms.

If you bought Pro under an earlier version of these terms, the refund window that applied at the time of your purchase still applies to you.
